Iain’s teaching draws directly from his experience as a practicing damages expert. His courses are designed to bridge the gap between academic theory and professional practice, equipping students and practitioners with the tools they need to understand how damages are assessed and evidenced in real-world disputes.
University Courses
ACC4712 Forensic Accounting
National University of Singapore, Business School
2022 – Present (9 semesters to date; average class size of 38 students)
Iain co-developed and teaches the quantum engagements component of this elective course, which covers the fundamentals of damage assessment, business valuation principles, and their application to common dispute scenarios. The course combines lectures with case study presentations and is designed to give students practical exposure to the methodologies used by forensic accountants in litigation and arbitration.
Key topics include: fundamental damages concepts and business valuation principles, the role of forensic accountants in intellectual property, investor-state, and insurance-related disputes, and the application of these principles to real-world scenarios.
Student evaluations over nine semesters have been consistently strong, with teaching effectiveness scores averaging 4.3 out of 5.0 and 100% positive feedback in multiple semesters. Students regularly cite the practical, real-world focus of the course as its greatest strength, particularly the opportunity to apply damages assessment and valuation techniques to scenarios drawn from actual disputes. The course has been rated above the Department of Accounting average for overall satisfaction in every semester offered.
Assessment of Damages in International Disputes
State University of Trade and Economics, Kyiv, Ukraine
2023 (9-week course delivered by live webinar; 34 students)
This dedicated module examined how damages are assessed in international commercial arbitration. It covered the role of damages experts, common damages scenarios, the methodologies experts employ, and the evidence required to assess and prove damages. Topics included discounted cash flow modelling, business valuation approaches by reference to International Valuation Standards, and compensation for expropriation in investor-state disputes.

As a founding committee member of APIEx, Iain provides training to practicing experts and chairs the institute’s Accreditation and Membership committee. APIEx works to develop and maintain standards for expert witnesses and damages experts across the Asia-Pacific region.
